ACACIA DECURRENS

“Black Wattle”

Family: Fabaceae

Sprouting: 6-42 days.

Frost hardy to -7 °C, Acacia decurrens is a fast growing, making it an ideal quick growing hedge or screening plant. A hardy Acacia and suited to most conditions, it prefers a warm and temperate climate with moist, free draining soil.  Widespread to New South Wales and Queensland although it has become naturalised in parts of Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory.

A medium sized tree with a grey trunk and fine feathery leaves. Masses of golden yellow ball shaped flowers occur during spring.  These flowers are considered edible.  They are rich in pollen and can be used to make fritters.  The flowers can also be used to create a yellow dye and the seeds can be used to create a green dye.
