Juncus Usitatus is one of 31 species of Juncus native to Australia although there are said to be over 300 species of the Juncus genus worldwide, according to the CSIRO.  Juncus Usitatus has become very popular as a clumping ornamental grass in Eastern Australia and adapts well to soil that is waterlogged, making it a good choice for swampy, aquatic areas and gardens.  It can be found growing under trees like Casuarina Cunninghamiana and can provide food, shelter and more for an1mals such as fr0gs, yabb1es, and nesting material for b1rds.  It is a strong and robust grass that naturally grows mainly along riverbanks and other waterways in muddy and sandy soils and can tend to dominate the area once it takes hold.  Juncus Usitatus grows naturally along the Eastern states and has been introduced elsewhere.  Juncus Usitatus does not mind high-salt soils and is also considered drought-tolerant, a great asset for an aquatic plant in Australia!  Easy to sow and to grow, this is a good clumping plant that will sway gracefully in any garden, and around any pond, dam, irrigation channel, and stream.
